Aug. 3, 2021On Dam Rehabilitation, the Gariya Dam in Tsholotsho has reached 60% while rehabilitation works on the dam wall spillways has reached 90% completion. A total of 69 boreholes were drilled and completed out of a target of 80. A total of 396 boreholes were rehabilitated while 2 858 boreholes were maintained from planned targets of 200 and 2000 respectively. Two boreholes were drilled and one solar powered pump and one hand pump were installed at Masase Rural Clinic in Mberengwa.

DDF is also drilling and rehabilitating boreholes across the country. 10000 boreholes are scheduled for routine maintenance and rehabilitation, whilst drilling of 500 new boreholes countrywide is a set target, each province will get an equal share of the new boreholes.

Treasury has released $46 million to the District Development Fund (DDF) to help drill 600 boreholes that will provide clean water for consumption and irrigation, especially in the country’s eight rural provinces, in line with President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s recent directive.The exercise also involves rehabilitating hand-pumps to restore their efficiency and productivity. DDF director of water supplies and maintenance Mr Edwin Toriro told our Harare Bureau that the projects, which are being jointly undertaken with the Ministry of Health and Child Care, would be biased towards drought-prone areas.

Cabinet considered an update on the Public Works Programme and the DDF Borehole drilling programme, which was presented by the Minister of State for Presidential Affairs and Monitoring Implementation of Government Programmes. Cabinet expressed satisfaction over the progress in the programme, which has assumed urgency in view of the current drought situation. Implementation of the programme will alleviate the plight of the country’s citizens and livestock in areas most affected by the drought.
